Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
For Asian Indians, the WHO and Indian guidelines use lower cut-offs: 18.5–22.9 is normal, 23–24.9 is overweight and 25 or more is obese, because health risks like diabetes start at lower BMI. The standard international cut-offs are 18.5–24.9 normal, 25–29.9 overweight and 30+ obese.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI = weight in kg ÷ (height in metres)². For example, 70 kg and 1.70 m gives 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2.
Is BMI accurate?
It is a quick screening number. It does not separate muscle from fat, so athletes may score high. Waist size (below 90 cm for Indian men and 80 cm for women) is a useful second check.
