How this PDF compressor works
Large PDFs are almost always large because of the photos or scans inside them. Smart mode finds each embedded image, scales it to a sensible resolution and re-encodes it as an efficient JPEG, then compresses any uncompressed data. Everything else (text, fonts, links and vector drawings) is left untouched, so the document stays searchable and crisp.
Pages to images mode renders every page as a picture and rebuilds the PDF from those pictures. It is the strongest option for phone scans and photographed documents, but text becomes part of the image and can no longer be selected or searched.
