PPF in brief

  • Lock-in: 15 years; partial withdrawals allowed from year 7; loans against PPF from year 3 to 6.
  • Safety: Government-backed, so the capital is safe.
  • Tax: EEE status. Interest and maturity are tax-free, and deposits count under 80C (old regime).

Compare with equity SIPs for higher (but market-linked) long-term growth, or fixed deposits for shorter goals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the current PPF interest rate?

The PPF rate is set by the Government every quarter. It has been 7.1% p.a. for several quarters; check the latest rate on the National Savings Institute or your bank's website and enter it above.

How much can I invest in PPF?

Minimum ₹500 and maximum ₹1,50,000 per financial year. Deposits qualify for Section 80C deduction under the old regime.

When should I deposit to earn maximum interest?

Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the last day of each month. Depositing the full year's amount before 5 April earns interest for the whole year, which is what this calculator assumes.

Can I extend PPF after 15 years?

Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without fresh contributions. Choose 20, 25 or 30 years above and whether you keep contributing.

Is PPF interest taxable?

No. PPF is EEE: deposits (under old regime), interest and maturity are all tax-free.
