Frequently asked questions
What are the new regime tax slabs for FY 2026-27?
Up to ₹4 lakh: nil; ₹4–8 lakh: 5%; ₹8–12 lakh: 10%; ₹12–16 lakh: 15%; ₹16–20 lakh: 20%; ₹20–24 lakh: 25%; above ₹24 lakh: 30%. Budget 2026 kept the slabs unchanged from FY 2025-26.
Is income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free?
Yes, under the new regime the Section 87A rebate (up to ₹60,000) makes taxable income up to ₹12 lakh tax-free. For salaried people the ₹75,000 standard deduction lifts this to a salary of ₹12.75 lakh. Just above the limit, marginal relief ensures your tax is never more than the income above ₹12 lakh.
Which regime is better for me?
The new regime is usually better unless you claim large deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest). The calculator shows both and tells you how many extra deductions you would need for the old regime to break even.
What changed with the Income-tax Act, 2025?
From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaces the 1961 Act and uses the term "tax year". The rates and limits used here are those announced for FY 2026-27; we use familiar section names (80C, 87A) for clarity.
Does this include capital gains?
No. Capital gains on shares and mutual funds are taxed at special rates and the 87A rebate does not apply to them. This calculator covers salary and other normal income.
