Using CAGR for business and careers

CAGR isn't just for investments: use it to compare revenue growth between companies, to measure how fast your salary has grown, or to check whether a property's price rise has beaten inflation. For SIPs, use the SIP calculator.

How to use the CAGR Calculator tool

  1. Enter the starting value, ending value and number of years.
  2. Read the CAGR. Use the second box to project a value forward at a given CAGR.

Frequently asked questions

What is CAGR?

Compound Annual Growth Rate is the steady yearly rate at which an investment would have grown from its starting value to its ending value. CAGR = (end ÷ start)1/years − 1.

Is CAGR the same as average return?

No. If an investment rises 50% one year and falls 50% the next, the average return is 0% but you lost 25%. CAGR (−13.4% a year) shows the real result.

What is a good CAGR?

It depends on risk: around 6–7% for FDs, 10–12% for long-term diversified equity in India, and higher (with more risk) for small caps. Compare like with like.

CAGR vs XIRR?

CAGR suits one investment at one start date. For SIPs or multiple cash flows on different dates, use XIRR.
